I work on an energy rental platform, and I run into this question almost every day: my TronLink wallet has no TRX in it, can I still send USDT? Most people who ask it hold nothing but stablecoins in that wallet. Not one TRX.
The answer is simple. You can send USDT from TronLink with no TRX in the wallet. Exactly one route manages that, though four routes solve the problem in total, and which one suits you depends on what you already hold.
Here are the four options.
- Use GasFree, TronLink’s built-in feature. Pay the fee directly in USDT, and keep no TRX in the wallet at all. This is the only route that needs none.
- Rent Energy. Buy a small amount of TRX up front, and the transfer no longer keeps spending your tokens afterwards.
- Get a little TRX from a friend or an exchange as a stopgap. This is the fastest fix.
- Stake your own TRX. Only suits people who transfer often. For the occasional transfer, it does not pay off.
Before you work through those four options, remember one core rule: whoever signs and sends the transfer pays the fee. If your USDT sits in a TronLink wallet, then the Energy or the TRX has to be inside that same wallet address.
Four situations, find yours
Start with what is in your wallet right now, then read only that one paragraph.
USDT only, no TRX at all. Use the GasFree wallet. It takes the fee out of the USDT you send, at 1.5 USDT per transfer, plus a one-time 1.5 USDT activation on the first transfer, so that first one takes 3 USDT in total.
USDT only, but you can buy TRX. Rent Energy, then send as normal. One transfer costs about $0.60 to $1.60, which is cheaper than burning TRX.
TRX is in the wallet, and you send rarely. Just burn TRX. One transfer costs about $2.20. There is nothing else to set up.
You send often, and you can lock up funds. Stake about 6,800 TRX (about $2,300) for Energy, which covers the daily Energy allowance for roughly one ordinary USDT transfer, and the stake stays locked for 14 days after you unstake. Sizing that steady volume is its own problem, and we worked through it in how small teams cut the Energy cost of repeated USDT payouts.
Those prices assume TRX is at $0.34. One more rule applies to all four: if the recipient’s wallet balance is zero, the fee doubles.
In one line: only the first route works with zero TRX. The other three all need TRX in your hands, whether it pays a rental, gets burned, or sits as stake.
Why a wallet with USDT still cannot send
A TRC-20 USDT transfer is really a call to a smart contract. It is not a simple coin movement, so it needs Energy. A plain TRX transfer only needs Bandwidth.
Energy is priced at 100 sun per unit, and 1 TRX equals 1,000,000 sun. So one USDT transfer costs about 65,000 Energy. If you have no Energy, the network covers the shortfall by burning TRX out of your balance, which comes to about 6.5 TRX.
If the recipient’s USDT balance is zero right now, the contract has to create a new balance record, and the transfer costs about 130,000 Energy, or 13.0 TRX burned. Why the second tier doubles is set out in how much TRON Energy a USDT transfer actually needs.
A USDT balance cannot cover that on-chain work. The only thing that can pay for it is TRX. That is the heart of the problem, and every option below is a way of supplying the TRX side of the equation.
The four routes, in detail
Route one below is the only zero-TRX route. Routes two through four all need TRX in your hands.
1. TronLink’s built-in GasFree wallet
TronLink ships a sub-wallet called GasFree. The service fee is paid straight in USDT, and the on-chain network cost is advanced by the service provider. Sending from it needs no TRX from start to finish.
One detail here decides whether you truly achieve zero TRX. GasFree has its own address, separate from your regular TronLink wallet address. And moving USDT from your normal wallet into the GasFree address is itself a TRC-20 transfer, so that move still requires Energy or TRX in your normal wallet.
So how do you get around it? Withdraw your USDT from an exchange straight to your GasFree address. The exchange deducts its withdrawal fee from the amount you send and spends its own resources, so your wallet needs to hold no TRX at all. If your USDT is still on an exchange, this is the easiest option: withdraw it into the GasFree address, then send from GasFree, with no TRX anywhere in the process.
One case does run into a wall. If the USDT is already in your regular TronLink wallet, then moving it into GasFree needs Energy or TRX first. You can also simply take route three below.
On cost, GasFree switched to flat pricing on 6 May 2026: a 1.5 USDT activation fee on the first transfer, then 1.5 USDT per transfer. The activation is charged once. The fee does not change with the amount you send, so a large transfer and a small one cost the same.
We still tell you to go by the quote on the confirmation screen rather than trust any published figure. GasFree has revised its terms more than once, and the number shown in the app is always newer than the one in any article.
2. Rent Energy to your own address
Renting means a provider delegates the Energy generated by its staked TRX to your address for a fixed window. You need only a small amount of TRX to pay the rental, and the transfer then spends the rented Energy instead of burning your TRX.
How much you save is easy to work out. Burning one unit of Energy costs 100 sun, while renting one is priced at whatever the market asks. In September 2026 we surveyed 18 platforms over a one-hour window, and quotes ranged from 26 sun to 74 sun. In other words, renting Energy saves 26% to 74% per unit against burning TRX, and the lower the quote, the better.
One rental per transfer. The Energy is used up on that transfer, and it refills across a rolling 24-hour window rather than resetting at midnight, so a second transfer in the same hour needs fresh Energy.
3. Buy a small amount of TRX and burn it
This is the wallet’s default setting and needs no extra setup: transfer in TRX, send the USDT, and let the network burn 6.5 TRX or 13.0 TRX.
It is the most expensive way to cover a single transfer, but when you need to send urgently, it is also the fastest. TRX can be bought on exchanges, and plenty of wallets support buying it directly with a bank card.
Do not forget the one-time 1 TRX account creation fee. It is burned the first time you send TRX to a brand-new address, and whoever sends it bears the cost.
4. Stake your own TRX for Energy
If you transfer USDT often, staking TRX for Energy is usually a way to lower your cost over time. How much you stake depends on how often you transfer: one transfer a day means staking for one transfer a day, and several a day means staking several times that amount.
The staking yield floats with the network. On 13 October 2026 the ratio came to about 9.61 Energy per TRX staked per day, which works out to roughly 6,800 TRX staked to cover the Energy for one transfer a day. At a TRX price near $0.34, that is about $2,300 of capital tied up, and it stays locked for 14 days after you unstake.
That is the trade-off. You no longer pay 6.5 TRX per transfer, and the price is $2,300 parked to avoid it.
Doing it in TronLink, step by step
Route A: the GasFree wallet
Check your version first. GasFree needs TronLink App v4.15.0 or above, or the extension v4.2.0 or above.
- Open TronLink and find the GasFree entry. In the app, tap GasFree on the homepage. In the extension, click the GasFree mark beside your address.
- Note the GasFree address. It is different from your regular address, so write it down separately.
- Fund it. Send USDT in from your normal wallet, or withdraw it from an exchange straight to this address, which skips the trip through your normal wallet and the resources that step would need.
- Tap Send inside the GasFree wallet. Enter the recipient address, select USDT, and enter the amount.
- Read the fee on the screen. If the wallet is not activated yet, you will see “Since the GasFree wallet is not activated, an activation fee will be charged along with the current permit transfer”, with the activation fee and the transfer fee shown together.
- Tap Submit and sign. The status reads Processing while the provider submits it, then changes once the transfer is on-chain.
Route B: rent Energy to your own address
- Copy your TronLink address. Tap the address at the top in the app, or click the account name in the extension.
- Open an energy rental platform and set the delivery address to your own address, not the recipient’s. This is the field people get wrong most often.
- Choose the amount of Energy. If the recipient already holds USDT, order about 65,000 Energy. If the balance is zero, order about 130,000.
- Choose the rental duration. One hour and 24 hours both work. A one-day window is a cushion, not an allowance for a second transfer. How long the Energy actually stays usable depends on whether you staked, rented or burned it, which we break down in how long TRON Energy lasts when staked, rented or burned.
- Pay and wait a few seconds. The Energy is delegated on-chain and arrives within seconds.
- Confirm it arrived. Open the Resources page in TronLink and check that the Energy figure has actually gone up.
- Send the USDT from that same address.
How to check the Energy is really there
TronLink caches its numbers and refreshes on its own schedule, so a rented figure can lag. Your address’s record on TRONSCAN, by contrast, updates with every block, about every 3 seconds.
Paste your T-address into the TRONSCAN search bar and open the Resources tab. Look at Energy Limit minus Energy Used. Energy Limit counts the Energy you have staked yourself plus anything delegated to you, so even with no stake of your own, rented Energy shows up here. It is the available difference that tells you how much the next transfer can actually spend. Where that resource comes from and what it buys is covered from the ground up in our guide to what TRON Energy is and what it costs.
If you prefer the command line, the call below returns the same two fields. You can open it in a browser: replace the placeholder and paste the full link into the address bar.
Common questions
Can I really send USDT with not one TRX in the wallet?
Yes, through the GasFree wallet, because the fee is deducted straight from the USDT you are sending. This route only supports the assets GasFree covers, currently USDT and USDD.
Is GasFree cheaper or more expensive than renting Energy?
Per transfer the two are close. GasFree is a flat 1.5 USDT. Renting 65,000 Energy costs about 1.69 TRX at 26 sun and about 4.81 TRX at 74 sun, which comes to roughly $0.57 to $1.64 at a TRX price near $0.34. Renting is usually cheaper, but it needs TRX to pay for the rental, and GasFree does not.
Can I just send the USDT to the recipient and let them deal with it?
No. A USDT transfer that cannot pay its Energy is not delivered. The network burns TRX from your balance to cover the gap, and if you have no TRX, the transfer does not go out.
Why did my transfer cost 13 TRX instead of 6.5?
Because the recipient’s USDT balance was zero, so the contract had to create a new balance record. The tier depends on the balance at the moment you send, not on how long the address has existed. If the same send seems to cost more than last month, why a USDT transfer costs something different every time explains the moving parts. An address that held USDT last month and was later cleared to zero is priced exactly like a brand-new one.
Do I need Bandwidth as well as Energy?
Usually not. Every activated account gets 600 free Bandwidth points a day, and one USDT transfer uses about 350 bytes, so the first transfer of the day fits inside the free allowance.
