At the end of 2020, in an adoption group on Facebook in Monterrey, Mexico, someone posted photos of two puppies looking for a home. One of them — a golden retriever pup — was held up in one hand, staring straight into the camera with an unusually calm expression. That photo was later cropped on its own and spread across the Spanish-speaking internet. Five years later, this dog’s name showed up on the Solana blockchain as a token called JOTCHUA.

If you’ve ever wondered what separates a meme coin that fades in a week from a meme that actually has staying power, JOTCHUA is a sample worth dissecting: its story had been alive for five full years before the token ever existed. Today I’ll follow that thread — explaining where it came from, and also breaking down why it managed to break out from the tens of thousands of tokens launched in the same window.

How the golden retriever went viral

The story starts with a puppy named Caín. After that adoption photo circulated at the end of 2020, by January 2021 Spanish-language Facebook communities began tagging him “Perro Dinero” (Money Dog), attached to a folk belief: setting this dog as your profile picture would bring financial luck. Around the same time, someone on YouTube recast him as a character called “Esquizo” (Crazy Dog) — manic, philosophical, and a little unhinged — which gave the meme an added layer of personality.

What really locked in the name “JOTCHUA” was an Instagram post on January 24, 2021 by the user @_kingorange — an “anti-motivational” style poster with the single caption JOTCHUA, which pulled in more than 29,000 likes within three months. From there it traveled through Tumblr, Twitter, and Imgur, crossed the language barrier, and built up a sizable following in the English-speaking internet as well. Know Your Meme eventually added a dedicated entry for it.

What makes it special, to me, is that most regional memes stay trapped inside their native-language bubble, yet JOTCHUA carried its original personality intact into a completely different language. That cross-language lifespan is exactly the foundation that let it be put on-chain five years later — by then, the image was already a five-year-old cultural archive, not a script written by a project team on the fly.

The token moved faster than the story

The token itself didn’t arrive until five years later. The contract — launched via Pump.fun’s bonding curve — was created on June 7, 2026, and migrated to a DEX on June 10. Media outlets and the project team generally count June 10 as the “launch date.” The total supply is 1 billion tokens, fully circulating from day one: no team allocation, no unlock schedule, no buy/sell tax. A textbook fair launch.

One easy point of confusion is worth separating out: MEXC’s Meme+ zone listed JOTCHUA/USDT on June 9, 2026 — that’s an exchange-side listing. The token’s actual on-chain migration from the bonding curve to the DEX happened on June 10. These are two different layers, and the dates are a day apart.

The real Solana contract address is:

BcHEaaTCvycPwwsJ9yQTXdHP9X2gCLkznDbZ8VySpump

(There are plenty of copycats sharing the same name, and there’s even an ERC-20 JOTCHUA impersonator on Ethereum that has nothing to do with this Solana mainnet token. Before you touch anything, always verify the full address yourself.)

When I say “the token moved faster than the story,” I mean something else: that meme took five years to slowly mature, but this token’s price ran through an entire boom-and-bust cycle in just a few weeks. The narrative arrived slowly; the price spiked fast and then fell.

Why it managed to break out

To push a meme coin into the small group that actually gets remembered this cycle, a cute meme alone is nowhere near enough. Why JOTCHUA broke out, I break into a few layers — and none of them works in isolation.

The first thing that set its ceiling: it never had to build an audience from scratch. As noted, the meme had been alive for five years before the token, with memes, fan videos, and profile-picture culture all ready-made. More importantly, the people who had used it as a lucky avatar years earlier felt a real sense of ownership — “this is my meme” — toward the image. When an image you’d carried for years suddenly became buyable, many weren’t dragged in by buy calls; they simply wanted to join the fun themselves. That built-in, cross-language grassroots base is something almost no new meme can buy with money.

Look at another layer: the fit between the meme and the token is almost innate. “Perro Dinero” literally means “Money Dog,” and its earliest folk belief was “using this image as your avatar brings wealth.” An image already branded as a wealth magnet, turned into an asset that is literally a bet on your own fortune, fits together with almost no seam — it didn’t bolt onto a trend, it turned the original superstition directly into a token. Other animal coins have to invent a “why is this worth anything” story on the spot; JOTCHUA had been telling its story for five years.

And the fair-launch structure lifted its biggest psychological burden. One billion tokens, fully circulating from day one, no team share, no unlock, no tax. What meme coins fear most is the team quietly holding a big bag waiting to dump; an account book where “nobody gets privileges,” like JOTCHUA’s, makes people worry one notch less about insiders harvesting the crowd when they buy in — and even one notch less is enough to let more people dare to ape in.

There’s another layer — the “creator-tie” narrative that sets it apart from most anonymous launches. The project claims to be tied to the original creator, King Orange, and returns 100% of platform fees to the original author. In an environment where Pump.fun launches are generally anonymous, this is like slapping a “we’re not ripping off someone else’s culture” label on itself — it stands up morally and softens the “pure rug pull” impression. But to be honest, this tie is currently claimed only by the project side, with no independent third-party verification, so that point needs to be stated plainly.

What stacked all of this together was timing and amplification. Around June 2026, the Solana meme season was hot — on-chain liquidity was ample, retail FOMO was high, and the whole ecosystem was hunting for the next asymmetric bet. MEXC listed it first on June 9, followed by LBank and Bitrue Alpha (I didn’t verify each announcement date one by one — I only confirmed MEXC’s June 9), putting a token that had only circulated in small on-chain circles in front of a far wider pool of ordinary users. With several conditions landing at once, that’s what sustained the pulse from the early-June rock-bottom price to the late-June high — over 16,000% by MEXC’s reckoning (from a low of 0.00006837 to a high of 0.01184).

From the peak to now

The peak came in late June 2026. Different aggregators give slightly different highs: CoinGecko recorded about $0.01373, CoinMarketCap recorded $0.01352 on June 27, and MEXC’s early reporting wrote $0.01184. At CoinGecko’s high, the market cap roughly touched just over $13 million; MEXC reported about $11.4 million in early July. I’ll just lay out this range as-is rather than pick one for you.

As for the present, the numbers look much less pretty. As of the September 24, 2026 snapshot, the price sits around $0.0019–0.0020, with a market cap of about $1.95 million–2.0 million (DexScreener live ~1.95M, CoinMarketCap ~1.96M, Phantom ~2.0M — three sources in agreement). That’s a drawdown of roughly 85% from the late-June peak.

The thin spots are glaring too: liquidity is only about 240K–310K, holders number around 13,600, and the top ten addresses hold about 22% combined (Phantom data, 2026-09-24; I didn’t separately check whether exchange hot wallets are included). On a market this thin, a slightly larger order can pump the price up — or smash it down.

This is the most typical arc of a meme coin: attention lifts it up, and the moment attention scatters, it loses its support.

A few closing thoughts

A puppy that started as just an adoption photo first spent five years as a meme in two languages, then got one more life as an on-chain token. Judged purely on story, it’s more grounded than the vast majority of memes written on the spot — I’ll grant it that. But the token itself has no utility, no cash flow, and its price only follows attention. If you’re watching it, what you should track is whether this meme’s popularity is still alive — not some roadmap, because there simply is no roadmap.

I’m Louise Lee, a practitioner in the digital-asset industry and a researcher at tronsell.io.
