In the summer of 2026, a Japanese polar bear cub pushed a meme coin up about 1,400% in seven days, then gave back about 99% over the next month — its market cap shrinking from roughly $5 million to roughly $40,000. The bear is still at the Oga Aquarium hugging its traffic cone, but the token named after it, MOMOTA (モモ太), has become a “ghost token” worth only a few tens of thousands of dollars. This was no script written by a project team. It is the story of a real animal meme that on-chain money suddenly amplified, and just as suddenly threw away.

A polar bear cub that treats a traffic cone as a treasure

The story starts on a gentle note. At the Oga Aquarium in Akita Prefecture, Japan, a polar bear cub named Momota (桃太, “Momota”) developed an odd fixation on a traffic cone. The keepers had introduced it as an enrichment toy. The cub would hug the cone and wander the enclosure with it, and once accidentally poked its mother, Momo, with the cone — she swatted it away, and the cub cheerfully picked the cone back up and kept playing. The clip spread across Japanese and overseas social media (AsiaOne ran a feature on it), and the cub became a celebrity that crossed the aquarium’s walls; even the number of visitors went up.

But Momota’s rise was gradual. It only met the public on April 11, 2026 — two days before the token launched — and at the time it was just an unknown cub. The traffic-cone gag was picked up by Japanese media through May and June. The moment it truly swept global social feeds was the video in early August 2026.

That combination — a real animal and a real, endearing behavior — is top-tier fuel in the meme coin world. It has deeper roots than a meme someone made up, and it travels more steadily. So it did not take long for a token named after it to appear on Solana: MOMOTA.

The token was born three months before the bear went viral

Here is the counterintuitive part: the token actually predated the bear’s global viral moment by more than three months.

On-chain data (DexScreener, main pool pairCreatedAt) shows MOMOTA graduated from the pump.fun launchpad into PumpSwap on 2026-04-13 at 13:17 UTC — a “fair launch” with no presale and no public team allocation. But for its first three months it was mostly quiet.

The turning point came around 2026-07-30: the original development team went silent, and holders organized a CTO (Community Takeover) — seizing the social accounts and the project’s identity back from the “abandoning team” and running it themselves (recorded by both DexScreener and Bitrue). In other words, before the bear ever went viral, this token had already been through one round of “original team fumbled, retail stepped in to keep it alive.”

The real fuse was the cub’s traffic-cone video resurging on overseas social media in late July and early August 2026. The post-CTO MOMOTA was perfectly placed to catch that real-world wave of attention.

August 2026: a 1,400% surge and three exchange listings

Once the catalyst landed, the token took off.

Citing CoinGecko data, BSCN reported that in the seven days through 2026-08-14, MOMOTA rose about 1,400%, with 24-hour volume hitting 5.88M** (up 314% week over week) and market cap reaching about **2.87M. Its ATH (all-time high) settled at $0.005114 on 2026-08-14, implying a market cap of about $5.1M (CoinGecko).

What made it better was that, on the same day (August 13–14), it listed on three exchanges: KCEX spot (08:20 UTC on 8/13), Ourbit spot (8/14), and Bitrue’s MOMOTA/USDT perpetual (12:00 UTC on 8/14, up to 10x leverage). The real bear was still chewing on its cone while the token on-chain was living its moment in the sun.

(One point easy to misread: the “about $2.87M market cap” BSCN cited was an intraday snapshot, lower than the roughly $5.1M implied by the intraday high of $0.005114. Both figures are real; they were just captured at different instants.)

Why MOMOTA went viral

Honestly, MOMOTA did not blow up because it had more “fundamentals” than other coins. The reason is plain: a real polar bear cub happened to sweep feeds again in August, and there was already a token named after it waiting on-chain.

The key here is the time gap. The token launched in April; the bear’s video did not resurge overseas until late July. If the token had appeared only after the bear went viral, everyone would have called it a bandwagon cash grab. But it was already there three months early, and the community had just finished a takeover. So it looked less like a scheme thrown together on the spot and more like a “hidden gem that got discovered” — even if that gem did not hold up in the end.

More coincidentally, around August 13–14, three things collided: the bear’s video was reposted widely again, the price hit its ATH, and KCEX, Ourbit, and Bitrue listed the token at the same time or in quick succession. More people on social media wanted in, the exchanges made buying easy, and the rising price fed new conversation — once that loop started turning, the short-term gain got pushed high.

On top of that, it followed the Solana + pump.fun fair-launch route: no presale, no complicated allocation, so retail could get in with just a few dollars or tens of dollars. For a meme coin, that low barrier is itself an amplifier.

So MOMOTA was not dragged up by some big whale. It was more like a real meme, a token that already existed, a cluster of exchange listings, and easy retail entry — four things that happened to meet within the same week or two. The catch is that these explain why it rose, not why it could not get back to $5M. The numbers in the next section tell the second half of the story.

From $5M to $40K: the gap in the numbers

Put the peak next to the present, and the gap is glaring:

ATH: 2026-08-14, $0.005114 (market cap about $5.1M)

Current snapshot (September 2026, DexScreener live): price about 0.000036**, market cap about **36K, main-pool liquidity about 29.5K**, 24-hour volume only about **2.3K

At the same moment, CoinGecko’s aggregate read was about 57K** in market cap — both live sources sit in the **36K–57K range, a drawdown of about 99% from the peak

In other words, after that 1,400% frenzy, the price gave almost everything back. Liquidity leaked from an earlier Bitrue snapshot of about 115K** down to about **29.5K, and the holder count was about 3,900–4,000 (earlier Bitrue snapshot). The sharpest contrast: the cub is still a celebrity and the aquarium still draws crowds, while the token named after it has shrunk into a “ghost token” worth a few tens of thousands of dollars.

(Data transparency note: the public aggregator’s ATL field for MOMOTA shows $0.051685, which is higher than its own ATH of $0.005114 — plainly a display error, so this article does not use it. The confirmed price low fell before the early-August 2026 run-up; the exact figure is not reliably disclosed in public sources.)

Closing: the bear is still here, the token is gone

Momota’s story is hard to sum up with a single word like “scam” or “rug pull.” On-chain records show it really was ignited by genuine social media attention, and it really did fall all the way back once the hype faded. There is no evidence the team dumped heavily at the top — but there is equally no evidence the token left behind any lasting value to support it.

The contrast worth remembering is this: that polar bear cub is still a star at the Oga Aquarium, while the token named after it has only a few tens of thousands of dollars in liquidity left. A meme coin can ride a real, cute, highly shareable event to takeoff — but the staying power of the event and the staying power of the token price were never the same thing.

About me and Tronsell.io

I’m Louise Lee, a researcher at tronsell.io, tracking on-chain costs and the meme coin ecosystem over the long run.
