Without energy, the network burns TRX out of your balance to cover the fee. That is also why users come to us every week asking why a single USDT transfer was charged 6.5 TRX. This is the answer I send back. It is a TokenPocket energy rental tutorial. In it I will show you how to rent TRON energy inside TokenPocket for your USDT transfers.

TokenPocket gives you two ways to rent energy, and they do not price the same way. One is a two-tap convenience. The other is the one you want if you send often.

Here is the whole thing, from the first step to the last.

What a USDT transfer actually costs

If you hold no energy, the network burns TRX out of your balance. The price is 100 sun per unit of energy, and 1 TRX is 1,000,000 sun. A normal USDT transfer needs about 65,000 energy. That is 65,000 × 100 = 6,500,000 sun, or 6.5 TRX.

If the receiving wallet has never held USDT, the same transfer needs about 130,000 energy, roughly double. That is about 13 TRX. If you want the arithmetic behind that jump, we break down why a first-time recipient costs twice as much.

Renting energy means paying the market rate instead, and skipping that TRX burn.

Where you are sending

Energy needed

Cost if you hold no energy

Rented at 25 sun

Rented at 40 sun

A wallet that already holds USDT

65,000

6.5 TRX

1.63 TRX

2.60 TRX

A wallet that has never held USDT

130,000

13.0 TRX

3.25 TRX

5.20 TRX

Most orders fill between 30 and 70 sun per unit, which is 30% to 70% cheaper than burning. The cheapest short orders reach 25 sun, about 75% off.

One rule is worth remembering though: never pay more than 100 sun per unit. That is the burn price, and above it renting costs more than simply burning the TRX.

Staking is the third option, and it is the worst one for occasional use. Staked TRX yields about 9.6 energy per TRX per day. Covering one 65,000-energy transfer a day would lock up roughly 6,800 TRX, and you wait 14 days to get it back.

TokenPocket has two ways to rent TRON energy

The transfer-screen toggle

The Bandwidth/Energy page

Best for

One transfer, right now

Several transfers, or picking your own amount

What you choose

Nothing. The page is about control, and it is usually cheaper per transfer. You buy energy on the open market instead of paying for a one-off. If this is your first time buying, start with what TRON energy is and how to get it.

Use the toggle if you send USDT once a week. If you send every day, rent from the page or from a market provider. That is the kind of order we fill at Tronsell.io, and one order can cover several days.

Route A: rent at the transfer screen

Open TokenPocket and tap your TRON wallet.

Tap Transfer.

Paste the receiving address.

Pick USDT (TRC-20). This route covers USDT and other TRC-20 tokens. It does not cover a plain TRX send.

Tap Network Fee, then turn on Energy Rental.

Confirm and sign. The energy is rented for that one transaction.

If you hold USDT but no TRX, choose USDT as the way you pay the network fee. Energy Rental switches on by itself in that case.

Route B: rent from the Bandwidth/Energy page

Open your TRON wallet and tap Bandwidth/Energy in the toolbar.

Look at the Resource Data block. It shows your TRX balance, plus the energy and bandwidth you have left.

Tap Quick Lease, then EnergyPal. Set what you are doing, for how long and how many times. Each combination carries its own price.

Or tap Fast Trading to enter an energy amount and a rental length, then pay.

Or tap Buy under Self-service Trading. Enter the address that should receive the energy, the amount and your price. The default term is 3 days. Tap Place Order.

Wait a few seconds, then refresh Resource Data. The energy arrives as a received delegation.

Step 5 is where most people go wrong. Put your own address in that field, not the recipient’s. The energy has to land on the wallet that signs the transfer, and that wallet is yours.

The free subsidy and its 10-minute countdown

TokenPocket gives out a set daily quota of free transfer subsidy, and one subsidy covers exactly the energy for a single USDT transfer. Mind the countdown though: you have to finish the transfer within 10 minutes of claiming it. If you do not use it in time, it is reclaimed automatically. So enter the receiving address first, then claim the subsidy. Do not claim it early.

Size the order to the days you send, not the number of sends

This is the part most tutorials skip. Rented energy refills on a rolling 24-hour basis. It is a daily quota, not a bucket you drain once.

So an order of 65,000 energy, valid for 3 days, only supports one transfer per day. It does not cover three transfers in a row within one hour either. In other words, if you need to send two transfers in one morning, the second one cannot draw on the rented energy. It still burns about 6.5 TRX. If you send two transfers a day, rent a 3-day package of 130,000 energy instead of a 6-day package of 65,000. If you want to know how that refill window is actually calculated, see how long TRON energy actually lasts.

One more number to watch

TRON uses a dynamic energy model. It recalculates the cost of every contract every 6 hours, and the model can scale the base cost by up to 4.4 times. An energy quote you saw last week is not today’s price. Check the live quote right before you send. For the wider version of that question, see why the same USDT transfer costs a different amount every time.

FAQ

Do I need TRX to rent energy in TokenPocket?

Not always. Pay the network fee in USDT and the rental switches on for you. There is a trap here though: a wallet that has never received TRX is not activated, and energy cannot be delivered to an unactivated address. Paying the fee in USDT is the fix, because TokenPocket handles the activation in the same step.

Can I cancel a rental?

No. A delegation cannot be pulled back before its lock ends, and unused energy is not refunded. Size the order to what you will actually send.

Should I stake TRX instead?

Only at steady, high volume. One transfer a day would need about 6,800 TRX locked for at least 14 days. Ten 3-day orders at 25 sun cost about 16 TRX for the same month.

Is renting energy safe?

Yes, when the provider only asks for your public TRON address. Energy is delivered on-chain, so it lands in any wallet, including TokenPocket. Nobody needs your private key or seed phrase. Any service that asks for them is a scam.

Can I rent my own energy out?

TokenPocket has a Sell option. It is not address-only: the documented flow asks you to grant the platform an active permission covering staking, delegation, reclaiming delegations, voting and reward collection. Grant only those scopes, and never smart-contract calls or asset transfers. A provider that only ever needs your address is the safer route — that is how our own desk takes orders.

Sources

TRON developer documentation, resource model: the definition of energy and bandwidth, the formula that turns staked TRX into a share of the network’s energy, the 600 free bandwidth points per account per day and their gradual 24-hour recovery, and the burn prices of 0.0001 TRX per energy unit and 1,000 sun per byte of bandwidth.

TRON developer documentation, network parameters: the energy fee of 100 sun, set by committee proposal #104 and effective 29 August 2025; the 6-hour maintenance interval; the 14-day unstake delay; and the 15,000 TRX maximum fee limit. These are governance-adjustable and can change again.

TRON developer documentation, account activation and delegation: a new account is created by its first inbound TRX transfer, which burns 1 TRX and is charged to the sender, and a delegation cannot be delivered to an account that is not activated.

TRON developer documentation, Stake 2.0: a delegation takes effect when it is confirmed, runs for the lock period the sender sets, and cannot be cancelled before that period ends.

TRON developer documentation, Dynamic Energy Model: the energy factor ranges from 0 to 3.4 and is recalculated each maintenance cycle, which makes the multiplier on the base cost as high as 4.4 times.

TokenPocket help centre, Energy Rental Service: the Bandwidth/Energy menu and its four areas, the Energy Rental toggle on the transfer screen, the Network Fee route for DApp interactions, the option to pay the network fee in USDT, the free transfer subsidy and its 10-minute expiry, and the vendor’s own “save up to 75%” claim.

TokenPocket help centre, staking and resource management: freeze and unfreeze, resource delegation with its optional lock period, and the 14-day return period.

Industry-measured consumption for a USDT TRC-20 transfer: about 65,000 energy when the recipient already holds USDT, and about 130,000 when the recipient’s USDT balance is zero.
