Tracing The Toad Pepe (TOAD): From a Single Tweet to $22M, Then Down 90%

liujl2026-09-30 15:48:45

The one I’m breaking down today isn’t some animal influencer, and it isn’t an official project on any chain — it’s a frog. More precisely, a toad from the Pepe family. The Toad Pepe, ticker TOAD, graduated from pump.fun on Solana in early August 2026, and within days a single tweet from a named, well-known crypto figure lit it up: market cap shot to $22 million, then gave almost all of it back over the following weeks. I want to lay out exactly how this frog came together, and use it to show how a 2026 memecoin actually gets “manufactured.”

Where the frog came from

The TOAD character itself isn’t original. It leans on Pepe, the old internet meme — the green frog from Matt Furie’s 2005 comic Boy’s Club that has lived online for two decades and spawned countless variants. CoinGecko literally tags it “Frog-Themed” and “The Boy’s Club.” In other words, it was born borrowing a ready-made emotional symbol that internet users everywhere already recognize.

What actually pulled this frog out of a crowd of a thousand others was a tweet on August 9, 2026. Mike Dudas — founder of 6th Man Ventures, former CEO of The Block, and a seed investor in the launch platform pump.fun — posted on X that he had been sent TOAD by the community, and said the “toad version of Pepe is my favorite Pepe.” He also said he wouldn’t sell those tokens, and would follow another influencer, Ansem, in using them to reward people who spread the community narrative. That one line pushed a freshly graduated frog into the spotlight.

The night it launched on-chain

Back to the chain. TOAD launched on Solana’s pump.fun on August 8, 2026, and later that day (UTC 13:59 on August 8) graduated from the bonding curve and opened its main liquidity pool on PumpSwap. The contract address is A13oRB9FFaiUjfi6LdCg6p9ka1u8SfGkUFs4SKvPpump — full address, no typos, verifiable on Solscan and DexScreener.

The hard cap is 1 billion tokens, with about 960.5 million currently in circulation — nearly all released, no team lockup, no preset allocation. This “fully circulating, no presale, no tax” structure is the typical playbook for pump.fun memecoins. The upside is that nobody can secretly mint more; the downside is that the tokens have been scattered across the market from day one, so whoever buys first sets the short-term price. The dev team is anonymous, and Dudas is not part of the team — he has repeatedly stressed that 6th Man Ventures made no formal investment in TOAD; he was simply speaking as an individual after receiving community tokens.

The pulse one tweet set off

Almost the moment Dudas posted, the chart moved. According to GMGN and multiple reports, TOAD’s market cap hit roughly $20 million within a few hours, then pulled back to about $12 million, with daily trading volume briefly exceeding $52.1 million. By August 11 it touched its all-time high: about $0.023 per token, a market cap near $22 million. Around that time the holder count reached roughly 22,000 (an August 13 snapshot).

One detail worth noting: Dudas was not part of the TOAD team. He mainly entered through developer-gifted tokens and, by his own account, made a small buy — on-chain shows about $240, or 4.618 million tokens — not a large position — and he publicly committed not to sell. This “airdrop tokens to an influencer, then let them shill” pattern had actually been validated once before on an Ansem-related token; TOAD essentially replayed the same script, just with a toad in the lead role.

Why it blew up: a stack of pushes

A frog going viral isn’t luck — several layers stacked on top of each other.

First, it landed on an emotional anchor that had already existed for twenty years. Pepe is a meme the whole internet gets; there’s no need to re-educate the market. The name alone made people go, “oh, I get it.”

Next layer: it was packaged as a character with a name, a website, and an X account (The Toad Pepe), not just a stray emoji. That personification let ordinary people grasp it at a glance, widening the audience well beyond pure abstraction memes.

Another layer: it rode a playbook that had just been proven. The precedent of Ansem receiving tokens and shilling them to the moon was only weeks earlier, and the market had already been “trained”: when people see an influencer take tokens, promise not to sell, and talk about building community, retail’s first reaction isn’t suspicion — it’s FOMO, rushing in for fear of missing out.

Even better for the pump: risk warnings practically became free advertising. Plenty of analysis pieces at the time cautioned that “an influencer shilling isn’t an investment endorsement” while putting TOAD’s surge in the headline. That reverse exposure pushed something that lived only inside crypto circles onto the timelines of many ordinary readers.

Finally, the structure: pump.fun’s fair launch, nearly fully circulating supply, and Solana’s near-free transaction fees made this token inherently “flammable” — a little buying pressure pushes the price up, while thin liquidity means that once the hype recedes, the drawdown is just as fast. These layers formed a loop that produced those three days of madness.

Peak and the fall

After the peak, the story went to the more typical half of a memecoin arc. TOAD touched its all-time high of about 0.023 (a ~22M market cap) on August 11 but couldn’t hold, then slid all the way down. By September 21 it hit its all-time low of about $0.00156. As of the live snapshot I pulled when writing this (September 30, 2026), the price is about $0.00206, market cap about $1.98 million, total liquidity about $390k, and 24-hour volume about $390k — roughly a 90% drop from the peak.

In other words, the frog lit by a single tweet essentially gave back its hottest stretch within a few weeks. It never got a formal listing on a major centralized exchange (I found no confirmed CEX listing announcement; trading still concentrates on Solana DEXes: PumpSwap, Meteora, Orca), which has largely capped the new money it can absorb. A side note: an identically named TOAD exists on Ethereum (contract 0xac1d3d7a8878e655cbb063d58e453540641f4117); it currently has no active trading pairs on Ethereum (not even picked up by DexScreener) and is completely illiquid — a textbook imposter. Always go by the contract address, never the name.

A final thought

Having laid out this frog, one thing is clear: by 2026, memecoins are long past being “just crypto people playing among themselves.” A ready-made cultural symbol, plus a named and credible influencer, plus near-free launching and trading on Solana, and you can manufacture a $22 million frenzy in three days. But when it comes down, the ones left holding are usually the ones who rushed in last and treated the tweet as an endorsement. Understanding this structure beats guessing whether its next chart will pump. Next time you see “an influencer took tokens, won’t sell, is building community,” don’t rush in — think about who exits, and when, inside this structure.

I’m Louise Lee, a researcher at tronsell.io. Tronsell.io runs a self-operated energy pool with roughly 400 million TRX staked, supplying about 3.7 billion TRON energy and 35 million bandwidth to 10+ institutional clients. We do fee optimization and energy rental on the TRON chain — and if you trade memecoins on Solana or TRON, keeping your transfer and transaction costs under control is worth just as much thought.

  1. On-chain data: DexScreener token page (TOAD contract), CoinGecko contract entry (the-toad-pepe), Solscan token page — pool creation time, price, market cap, ATH/ATL, supply, and liquidity were cross-checked from live pulls on both DexScreener and CoinGecko and they agree.
  2. Market and events: KuCoin Flash, BlockBeats, ChainWeeks, Followin — the 2026-08-08/09 launch, Mike Dudas’s tweet and shilling, market cap reaching ~$20M, single-day volume of $52.1M, and ~22k holders on August 13.
  3. People background: Decrypt, memecoin.wiki, FinNotes, MarketScreener, etc. — Mike Dudas is founder of 6th Man Ventures, former CEO of The Block, and a seed investor in the launch platform pump.fun (self-reported ~$2M); neither he nor 6th Man Ventures made a formal investment in TOAD.
  4. Imposter check: Followin recap — the Ethereum namesake (0xac1d…) now shows no active trading pairs and is completely illiquid; a textbook junk token, don’t buy the wrong one.
  5. Playbook comparison: the “gift tokens to an influencer, who shills without selling to reward community narrative” script was already proven on Ansem-related tokens; TOAD is the same pattern replayed.
  6. Risk-disclosure sources: exchanges and research outlets uniformly flagged memecoins as extremely high risk, with prices driven by sentiment and traffic and no cash flow or fundamentals.

Memecoins have no intrinsic value, no cash flow, and no roadmap; prices are driven entirely by sentiment, traffic, and attention, and can rise tens of times in hours or fall more than 90% in days. On-chain data may be delayed or inaccurate, team identities and website/social information may change, and namesake imposters are everywhere. Only put in money you can afford to lose, and independently verify the contract address and information before making any decision.
